Relinquishment of Nepali Citizenship

Nepali citizens who wish to renounce their Nepali citizenship must submit the following required documents to the Embassy of Nepal in Washington, D.C.

Required Documents:

  • A duly completed Relinquishment of Nepali Citizenship Application Form (Download Form HERE )

  • Original Nepali Citizenship Certificate

  • Two recent passport-size photograph

  • Copy of U.S. Passport

  • Copy of U.S. Certificate of Naturalization

  • Self-addressed prepaid return envelope with a tracking number (Not required for in-person pickup)

  • Payment Method: Debit Card/Credit Card/ Cashier's Check/ Money order

    • Cashier's Check or Money Order must be made payable to: “The Embassy of Nepal, Washington, D.C.

1. I have lost my citizenship certificate but wish to renounce my citizenship. What is the process?
You are required to contact your respective District Administration Office in Nepal to obtain a record verification letter (अभिलेख) of your citizenship. Upon receiving this document, you may proceed with the renunciation process either at the same office or through the Embassy of Nepal or its Consulates in the United States.

2. How long does it take to receive a citizenship renunciation certificate when applying through the Embassy?
The processing time typically ranges from three months to one year. Applications processed directly through the respective District Administration Office in Nepal may be completed more quickly.

3. I submitted my citizenship renunciation application but have not received any updates. What should I do?
The Embassy will notify applicants once the application has been forwarded to the Department of Consular Services in Kathmandu. Further updates can only be provided after the Embassy receives the renunciation certificate from the Consular Office. Applicants are requested to remain patient during this process.
