1. I can’t find any appointments. What should I do?

2. Can I visit at a time other than my appointment?
Applicants are advised to adhere strictly to their scheduled appointment date and time. Please plan your visit accordingly.
3. Can I apply for passport renewal/issuance by mail?
No. Due to the technical requirements of the e-passport system, in-person appointments are mandatory for both renewal and issuance.
4. Can I pay for services in cash?
No. The Embassy does not accept cash payments. Payments must be made via debit/credit card or money order.
5. When can I renew my passport?
You may renew your passport when its validity is less than one year or if it has insufficient visa pages.
6. How long does it take to receive my renewed passport?
Processing typically takes 1.5 to 2 months from the date of biometrics.
7. Do I need to bring photographs?
No. Photographs will be taken at the Embassy on the day of your appointment.
8. My passport is expired. Can I travel with it?
No. Travel is not permitted with an expired passport or one with less than six months’ validity. For urgent travel to Nepal, you may apply for a one-way travel document. A valid passport is required for return travel.
9. I do not have my physical citizenship card. What should I bring?
For renewal, a clear and readable copy of both sides of your citizenship certificate is acceptable. For first-time issuance, the original citizenship certificate is mandatory.
10. I lost my passport and do not have a copy. What should I do?
If you have a copy of your citizenship certificate or know your passport number, the Embassy can guide you through the application process.
11. Can I use details from my Green Card or Social Security if they differ from my Nepali documents?
No. Passport details must match your Nepali citizenship certificate, pension booklet, or academic certificates. Minor discrepancies of up to three days in dates may be considered.
12. How can I add my husband’s surname to my name?
You may do so by presenting a marriage certificate issued by the District Administration Office in Nepal.
13. I cannot enter “/” or “-” in my citizenship number. What should I do?
These characters are not required. Please enter only the numerical values.
14. Where should I enter my U.S. phone number?
Please enter your U.S. number in Section 19 (Emergency Contact Number).
15. Where should I enter my emergency contact number?
Please enter it in Section 14 (Contact Number).
16. I lost my citizenship certificate and do not have a copy. What should I submit?
You must provide a verification letter from the relevant District Administration Office confirming your identity and citizenship records.
17. Can I retrieve my passport after submitting it for renewal?
Yes. You may request its return; however, you must mail it back to the Embassy when your new passport is ready for issuance.
18. How can I check the status of my passport?
If four weeks have passed since your biometrics, please email your full name, passport number, and biometrics date to:

19. Can someone else collect my passport on my behalf?
Yes. The authorized person must present a signed consent letter from you along with their photo ID.
20. How will I know when my passport is ready for collection?
You will be notified via email and/or phone. You may collect your passport one week after receiving notification.
Visa Related Queries
1. Do I need an appointment for a visa?
Appointment is not required for in-person ETA applications. Office hours are 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM (excluding lunch 1:00–2:00 PM), Monday through Friday, except public holidays.
2. What are the requirements for carrying medication?
Travelers must carry medications in original pharmacy-labeled packaging, along with a copy of the prescription and a physician’s letter.
3. How long is the ETA valid?
ETA is valid for up to six months from the date of issuance.
4. How can I pay the visa fee?
In-person applicants may pay via debit/credit card, cashier’s check, or money order. Mail applicants must pay via cashier’s check or money order. Personal checks are not accepted.
5. Are children under 10 exempt from visa fees?
No. All U.S. citizens are required to pay the applicable visa fee.
6. What if I do not want to mail my passport?
You may obtain a visa on arrival at Nepal’s entry points. Details:

7. How do I obtain a visa at the Embassy?

8. My application ID starts with ‘V’ or ‘Z’. Can I get a visa before departure?
No. Such applications are eligible only for visa on arrival. To obtain an ETA from the Embassy, your ID must start with “M”.
9. I am taking my pet to Nepal. What do I need to do?
Individuals traveling with pets to Nepal must ensure that they have the following documents:
- An International Animal Health Certificate issued by a government-authorized body
- A valid vaccination card
- An invoice (if the pet was purchased) or proof of ownership (if no invoice is available)
- A copy of the owner’s passport
Pet owners are required to inform the Animal Quarantine Office in Nepal in advance of their arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). This can be done by sending an email with details of the travel itinerary. Emails may be sent to: ktmquarantin@gmail.com. Applicants are also encouraged to visit: ktm.aqo.gov.np for additional information.
Upon arrival, the pet owner must report to the Animal Quarantine Office at the airport and formally declare the pet, presenting all the required documents listed above.
Travel Document Related Queries
1. Who can apply for a Travel Document?
Nepali citizens with expired passports or passports valid for less than six months who need to travel urgently to Nepal within three months.
2. Do I need to appear in person?
No. Applications can be submitted by mail.
3. How long is it valid?
Three months from the date of issuance.
4. Can it be used to travel to other countries?
No. It is valid only for one-way travel to Nepal.
5. Can I transit through other countries?
Yes, provided Nepal is your final destination.
6. How can I apply for a Travel Document?

7. If my travel document is lost or damaged after issuance, how can I apply for a replacement?
In the event that your travel document is lost or damaged, you must follow the same procedure as applying for a new travel document. Applicants are required to resubmit all necessary documents, either in person or by mail, and pay the applicable fees again.
8. Can I travel to Nepal using a photocopy of a travel document issued by the Embassy?
While scanned copies have been accepted for travel in some cases, applicants are strongly advised to carry the original hard copy of the travel document when traveling to Nepal to avoid any inconvenience.
POA (Power of Attorney) Related Queries
1. Do I need to book an appointment for POA?
Yes. Applicants are requested to schedule an appointment via email at their convenience by contacting:
socialsecretary@nepalembassyusa.org or consular@nepalembassyusa.org.
Alternatively, applicants may visit the Embassy on working days between 10:00 AM and 15:30 PM, subject to prior email confirmation. Please include your preferred date and time in your email and plan your visit only after receiving confirmation from the Embassy.
2. What documents are required for POA?

Please note that POA services at the Embassy are available only to individuals holding valid Nepali citizenship and a Nepali passport.
Required Documents:
- Two copies of the POA document in traditional Nepali paper (Nepali Kagaj) duly prepared by a registered lawyer in Nepal.
- An application addressed to the Head of the Mission by the POA giver.
- Both Original and copies of the Citizenship Certificate and Passport of the POA giver and a copy of the Citizenship Certificate of the POA receiver.
- Recently taken two passport-size photographs of both the POA giver and the POA receiver.
- Original Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) and its copy, or the document showing the visa status of the POA giver and its copy.
- The applicant must be present in person at the Embassy.

3. If POA service is not available for foreign citizens of Nepali origin, what is the alternative?
U.S. citizens of Nepali origin must prepare a Power of Attorney (POA) document in English in the United States and complete the required attestation process before submitting it to the Embassy. The process is as follows:
- Prepare a Special Power of Attorney document in English in the United States
- Notarize the document through a licensed notary public
- Authenticate the document from the Office of the Secretary of State of the state where the document was issued
- Authenticate the document from the Office of Authentications of the U.S. Department of State

Attestation Related Queries
1. Do I need to appear in person for attestation?
No. A representative may submit documents on your behalf for attestation.
2. My driving license is under renewal, and I only have the receipt. Can the Embassy verify it based on the receipt or online records?
No. The original driving license card is required for verification of content. The Embassy does not provide verification based on receipts or online records alone.
Manjurinama / Consent Related Queries
1. Do I need to come in person for Manjurinama?
Yes. In-person presence is mandatory for processing Manjurinama (consent) documents.
NRN ID Related Queries
1. Can we receive NRN citizenship through the Embassy?
No. At present, the Government of Nepal has not authorized the Embassy to issue NRN citizenship. Applicants are advised to contact their respective District Administration Office in Nepal for further information.
2. What rights are granted with an NRN ID?
Kindly check prevailing NRN Act and Rules.
3. I am a woman of Nepali origin married to a non-Nepali foreign national. Is my child eligible for an NRN ID card? Do I need to submit additional documents?
No. The child is not eligible to receive an NRN ID card.
4. Is it possible to obtain an NRN ID card from Nepal? Whom should I contact?
Yes. You may apply for an NRN ID card through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal (Labour Migration and Nepali Diaspora Coordination Division). Please select the appropriate office when completing the online application.
5. Can I apply for an NRN ID card in Washington, DC during my visit, even if my residence falls outside the Embassy’s jurisdiction?
Applicants are advised to contact the Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over their state of residence. If you plan to apply while visiting Washington, DC, please confirm in advance by emailing consular3@nepalembassyusa.org before scheduling your visit.
6. I have submitted my citizenship renunciation application and original citizenship certificate but have not yet received the renunciation certificate. Can I apply for an NRN ID card?
No. Submission of the official citizenship renunciation certificate is mandatory to apply for an NRN ID card.
7. Can I use an NRN ID card to transfer or sell land in Nepal?
An NRN ID card allows for the purchase of property in Nepal; however, it may not permit the transfer or sale of land.
Nepali Citizenship Renunciation Related Queries
1. I have lost my citizenship certificate but wish to renounce my citizenship. What is the process?
You are required to contact your respective District Administration Office in Nepal to obtain a record verification letter (अभिलेख) of your citizenship. Upon receiving this document, you may proceed with the renunciation process either at the same office or through the Embassy of Nepal or its Consulates in the United States.
2. How long does it take to receive a citizenship renunciation certificate when applying through the Embassy?
The processing time typically ranges from three months to one year. Applications processed directly through the respective District Administration Office in Nepal may be completed more quickly.
3. I submitted my citizenship renunciation application but have not received any updates. What should I do?
The Embassy will notify applicants once the application has been forwarded to the Department of Consular Services in Kathmandu. Further updates can only be provided after the Embassy receives the renunciation certificate from the Consular Office. Applicants are requested to remain patient during this process.

• My friend/relative is in a detention center. How can I assist them in traveling to Nepal?
Individuals in detention centers are facilitated by the U.S. Government for their travel to Nepal. On behalf of your friend or relative, you may apply for a travel document if their passport has expired or has a validity of less than six months.
Birth / Death / Missing Case Related Queries
1. We are Nepali citizens and need birth registration for our child born in the United States, as required by the ward office in Nepal. What should we do?
The Embassy issues birth registration only for children who intend to hold Nepali citizenship and a Nepali passport. In such cases, parents are required to submit an affidavit stating that the child has not been issued U.S. citizenship or a U.S. passport.
2. U.S. officials have requested my birth certificate. Can the Embassy issue one based on my Nepali citizenship and passport?
No. The Embassy does not issue birth certificates. However, it can provide attestation or English translation of relevant documents.

No. The visa bond requirement does not apply to individuals holding valid visas issued before January 21, 2026.
The visa bond requirement applies only to individuals who were specifically instructed by the U.S. Embassy during their visa interview to post a visa bond. Such individuals must enter and exit the United States through designated ports of entry. Failure to do so may result in denial of entry or improper recording of departure.
